This Site is About Virginia's Lost Covered and Timbered Bridges and dedicated to their memory.  This website contains the historical maps of  Virginia.

This website is dedicated to the discovery and the study of Virginia's Lost Covered Bridges through the research of Virginias historical maps..  It is the goal of this project to get the public interested in the history of Virginia's lost timbered  and covered bridges and thereby enhancing the preservation of the existing covered bridges we have.

The website is for the use of the public for research and education. It is not intended to be used for profit other than to benefit all who use this information and enrich our knowledge of what impact they have played in the history of our past and what role the lost bridges have  played in bringing us to this point.

Many of the Lost Covered Bridges are steeped in the Civil War. This site is about what impact the covered bridges had on the Civil War as well as the impact on the growth of the communities they affected and also the impact they had on the growth of the state of Virginia.

The images and information are for educational and research purposes and not intended to be copied or reproduced except for these purposes.  We are placing this restriction so that the website Virginia's Lost Covered Bridges may have better access to older photographs from other sources that have copywrite restrictions placed on them. We believe by doing this we may be able to obtain a greater amount, and quality of pictures and information and therefore present a more informative website.

A special note on the old maps.

The maps posted on our site were drawn in the early to mid 1800's. They are not entirely accurate. They were drawn and surveyed before GPS systems and modern engineering methods. They do give us a glimpse into the past as to where river crossings were and the old roads that existed at the time. In the mid 1800's, bridges were either made of stone or wood.

You will also see names of towns you cannot find on our modern maps because the towns were renamed or just simply disappeared over time.
